Online course on Sustainability at Azim Premji University, Jan-Feb 2018

Rapid and widespread environmental, economic and social changes have led to urgent global questions of sustainability. Concerns of sustainability in developing countries like India can be very different than that of industrialised countries. In developing countries, equity and social justice are central to addressing sustainability, along with environmental concerns.

This interdisciplinary, multi-instructor course provides an introduction to sustainability within the context of development in India. We develop an integrated perspective on sustainability along ecological and social dimensions, and use these to examine critical themes of importance to India, like population, food, and climate change. We explore how our imagination of culture, markets, state, and even of nature itself influences sustainability action. We end with examining how to take sustainability action – as individuals, communities and larger collectives, and across all scales, from the local to the global.

Participants in this completely online course are expected to watch video lectures, join interactive online video-discussions with expert faculty from different domains, and participate in discussion forums. Those who complete all activities and tests and submit assignments will get a Certificate of Completion from Azim Premji University Participants in this completely online course are expected to watch video lectures, join interactive online video-discussions with faculty and participate in discussion forums. Ethics in Public Health Practice is a short-term course designed for public health professionals involved in a range of roles including research, advocacy, training, program design and management, monitoring and evaluation, health promotion and communication.

Ethical and reflective public health practice is the cornerstone of realizing the common goal of Health for All.

What you will learn

Reaching the Real India | Youth Exposure Programme

RRI_Invitation.jpeg

Background
In three years, India will become the world’s youngest country with 64 percent of its population in the working age group. With growing issues in India, Indian youth is the one getting affected the most; creating frustration within them as they feel that their involvement in the decision-making process is very limited. Thus, it is the need of the hour for young people to become more aware of the issues affecting them directly and indirectly so that they can draw a clearer and variegated picture of their country and consequently engage in resolving those issues.

About RRI Winter 2017
CACIM is organizing Reaching the Real India for the young students to provide them with an opportunity to connect and contribute to the socio-political movements of India directly. We, in CACIM, believe that young people are the infinite source of energy, creativity and freshness and also a valuable resource for socio-economic and political transformation. Through this programme, we want to build a bridge between omnipotence of youth and experience of people and organisation involved in social issues to create a symbiotic relationship between the two.
The programme has been developed to empower college students by giving them a chance to spend two to four weeks in one of the people’s movements/community organisations. This initiative aims at filling the gap between the academic community and the mass organisations that work on human rights, equality, and sustainable development. The objectives include:

  • To expose the students to the realities of India and the dynamics of social change.
  • To facilitate an organic link between the students and social movements.
  • To help students understand the social realities vis-à-vis people’s issues.
  • To help students appreciate the need for struggle and role of social movements.
  • To help the students contribute their skills to the movement, and learn more from the movements.
Who is the program for?
If you are a college student who is looking for an opportunity to explore the socio-political issues of India up-close and be the part of the movements, then here is your chance to enroin the programme. We are looking for young people who are curious, eager, committed and most importantly team players.
Join us to make Reaching the Real India a success.

Winter School at IIIT Bangalore

Digital and the Everyday: A 3-day Winter School at IIIT Bangalore, 11th-13th December 2017
Applications are invited for a 3-day winter school organized by the Centre for IT & Public Policy (CITAPP) at the International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore (IIIT-B) during 11th-13th December 2017.

Concept
As digital technologies are proliferating, our everyday lives have become a series of digitally mediated interactions. From entertainment to education, from health to welfare, from banking to transportation, each of these everyday services are directly or indirectly embedded in the web of digital networks. What are the building blocks of these networks? Are they just a combination of software and hardware, or do they involve infrastructure, regulations, policy frameworks, institutional mechanism and much more? This entanglement of the digital and the everyday demands a more holistic understanding of these increasingly socio-technical systems that we experience through our everyday lives.

Themes for 2017
This year’s Winter School, Digital and the Everyday: from codes to cloud, takes an interdisciplinary approach to unpack and analyse different elements of our digitally mediated social existence. For example, the smartphone notification which reminds a user of a scheduled flight and also recommends the quickest way to the airport, is enabled by numerous technologies, most notably machine learning and data analytics, which in turn are dependent on the user’s data as well as of others in this shared digital space. Such an interaction raises several issues, such as those on algorithms and data, privacy, and the shaping of digital identities. It also points towards a multitude of actors that include engineers, policy-makers, designers, users, corporates, as well as activists. The Winter School will address the intertwined nature of some of these issues by drawing upon IIIT-B’s research in the area of IT & Society, consulting and other activities being undertaken at CITAPP, and its pioneering Masters Programme in Digital Society.

Programme Structure
The programme consists of lectures, interactive discussions, film screenings and group activities. At the end of the 3-day programme, participants will present a poster on a specific aspect of the digital and everyday discussed during the Winter School. The sessions will be conducted during 9 AM and 5 PM every day. Detailed schedule of the programme will be available by 3rd week of November 2017.

Applications
Anybody with a Bachelor’s degree, including those in their final year, in any discipline may apply. Working professionals employed in the government, corporate and not-for-profit sectors are also encouraged to apply. There is no fee for attending the Winter School. Outstation participants may be provided accommodation at IIIT-B’s hostels on payment of applicable charges. To apply, please fill in theApplication Form at https://goo.gl/BdtNWTApplications must be submitted by 12th November 2017. Accepted candidates will be notified by 17th November 2017.  For further queries, please write to: winterschool2017@iiitb.ac.in
