Job announcement at Mount Valley Development Association!

Mount Valley Development Association (MVDA) is a non-profit organization based in Tehri district of Uttarakhand in India. MVDA was started in 1995with a vision to eradicate poverty through development of sustainable livelihoodspromote good governance through social harmony, minimize social discrimination and develop entrepreneurship to minimize migration of youths from the rural mountain villages.

For more than 2 decades, MVDA has also been sharing its experiences with larger communities and advocating the issues responsible for degenerated Himalayan system successfully. MVDA is working in hostile mountainous terrains of District Tehri, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag districts and plain areas in Haridwar and Saharanpur covering range of concepts and methods drawing on various funding and support.

Presently MVDA is working with nearly 8000 families reaching over 32000 populace and formed 1200  Self Help Groups (SHGs) and 189 other working groups in this mountainous terrain of Tehri, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag,  districts and plain areas in Haridwar, Saharanpur, Hathras & Kapurthala. MVDA’soperation covers a span of 197 villages of 7 districts of Uttrakhand, Uttar Pradesh& Punjab. MVDA have also initiated registering 03 Women federations.

MVDA has been working extensively in sustaining the federation by creating systems where women are able to manage a dairy based livelihood enterprise and establishing a link with financial institutions like NABARD, banks, and insurance companies. MVDA mobilized a loan of Rs. 4.6 million under NABARD scheme for purchase of improved cattle for 30 SHGs.

MVDA has worked on the philosopy of making a balance between development and conservation of natural resources. Under Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT) funded project, MVDA developed feed resources in Van Panchayat, common land and also converges funds from MGNREGA, a central government sponsored job guarantee scheme. Over a period, MVDA has been able to link these feed resources to enhance milk productivity, with improvement programs and finally linking the milk producers to local urban market, through the dairy promoted as Umang Dairy.

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) has also partnered with MVDA in successful growth of wheat and barley crops. With knowledge and experience in System of Rice Intensification programMVDA has developed a model village in Bhilangana block of Tehri district.

MVDA has also developed a talent pool of resourceful people equipped with skills to efficiently mobilize farmers for System of Crop Intensification (SCI) promotion. With the support of OXFAM Hongkong, MVDA targets improvement of natural resources and promoted livelihood improvement in 9 village panchayats of Jolagad micro-watershed.

RA for urban research position on the DMIC project

A position of Project Research Associate is available for an international research project “Megaprojects and Reshaping of Urban Futures: Governance and Equity in the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor.” The selected candidate will work with a team from the University of Sheffield and SPA, Delhi on documentary and field-based research to examine the planning, governance and implementation of the DMIC’s Dadri-Noida-Ghaziabad node. Our work, in the Biodiversity and Resource Monitoring (BRM) Programme, aims to improve the understanding of marine systems by decentralizing knowledge to empower stakeholder communities and ensure it can directly inform decision-making. Our work involves information generation by bothresearchers and local communities, networking and outreach.
The BRM programme consists of 3 thematic sub programmes:

 Flagship species: Using sea turtles, sea snakes and other charismatic megafauna as central themes for addressing issues pertaining to fisheries, coastal development and global change.
 Fisheries: Focusing on exploited marine resources to develop transparent, collaborative and participatory strategies for the sustainable and equitable extraction of marine resources.
 Ecosystems and climate change: Addressing concerns of local and global change and its impact on local marine systems and dependent communities.
This position in particular concerns the latter two sub-programmes and currently includes overseeing fisheries and coral reef ecology projects in India’s oceanic islands but may involve geographical and conceptual expansions in the near future.

Position and responsibilities: We invite applications from suitable candidates for the position of Programme Officer for our Biodiversity and Resource Monitoring (BRM) Programme that focuses on fisheries, ecosystem dynamics and climate change projects. While this position is a longer term position, we will offer an initial one-year contract to the successful applicant. The contract will be renewed depending on the performance of the candidate. This position demands that the candidate be a highly self-motivated, independent and enterprising individual who will fulfil the following responsibilities of this position:
1. To engage with fishers, managers, leaders, scientists and other stakeholders engaged in fisheries to develop participatory fisheries management programmes
2. To oversee the execution of existing projects under the BRM programme including supervising personnel, progress, management of grants and administration
3. To execute specific project related outputs of the programme by undertaking researcher-lead and community-based projects on specific issues pertaining to fisheries monitoring, management, development and changing ecosystem dynamics;
4. To undertake travel to remote project areas to conduct research, oversee project activities, participate in meetings, workshops and network building activities;
5. To develop funding proposals for furthering research and interventions in line with the BRM programme’s goals and objectives.
6. To contribute to institution building activities, fund raising and administration at Dakshin in coordination with Dakshin’s administrative staff.

Location: The position will be based at Bangalore, but will involve considerable time spent in specific field sites in the union territories of Lakshadweep Islands and occasional travel to the Andaman Islands, and coastal states of mainland India.

Candidates must possess the following basic qualifications/skills:
 A minimum of three years of post-graduate work experience demonstrating independent thinking and capable execution of science projects relating to fisheries research and or marine ecosystems.
 A Master’s degree, preferably in the marine sciences, fisheries, or environmental studies.
 A demonstrable understanding of issues related to coastal and marine development, marine conservation and environmental monitoring and governance in India.

 Ability to work with a range of social groups and local institutions in rural settings such as grassroots conservation organisations, fishworker associations, research organisations and urban and rural groups in India.
 Ability to independently facilitate community meetings and demonstrate attention to detail and planning.
 Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
 Working knowledge of at least one south Indian regional language (preferably Malayalam) and spoken proficiency in Hindi.

Candidates with the following additional qualifications/skills will be preferred:
 Work experience and knowledge of coastal and fisheries related issues.
 Domain knowledge in the area of coastal and marine resource management, fisheries ecology and participatory resource governance.
 Data analysis and quatitative skills.

Job Description

The Centre for Equity Studies (CES) is looking for a Research Associate with experience and competency in conducting fieldwork. The researcher is primarily being hired to work on a project on Day Labor Markets (Labour Addas/ Labour Chowks) in urban areas; a key site will be Delhi/NCR. The work will entail using qualitative research methodologies to unpack the space of the labour market and develop a nuanced understanding of the relationships at play.

Apart from being a primary researcher on the Labour Adda Study, the candidate will be be expected to provide research support to the Sankaran Research team at CES around themes such as land, labour and employment, rural and urban poverty, rights of marginalised groups such as SC/ST communities, delivery of and access to basic entitlements. The study of these themes is located within discourses of development, studied critically through a lens of exclusion.

The research team is small in size and therefore researchers are also expected to take up coordination roles. In addition to research, as a full time employee, the hired individual will have to take on other responsibilities that are not purely research based.


1)The primary responsibility of the candidate will be to conduct primary and secondary research on Day Labor Markets also known as Labor Addas/ Nakas/ Chowks. This will include research methodologies such as observational research, conducting in depth interviews and focus group discussions.

2)The research assistant will also be expected to provide editing and research support to the team, or support in organising events, as allotted by the programme manager from time to time.

3)The candidate might also serve as the point of contact between CES and one funder and will be responsible for the compilation of quarterly progress reports.

    a)The candidate might oversee financial reporting for the assigned funder.
b)As and when required, the candidate might also draft proposals to apply for funding         for the India Exclusion Report.

4) Other responsibilities:

  1. a) Conceptualizing and executing short-term desk and field based studies from time      to time to supplement the other on-going research projects at CES.


1) Candidate should have a Master’s degree in Labor studies, Development Studies, Economics, public policy social anthropology, sociology or any related social science discipline.

2) Candidates should have between 1 – 3 years professional experience in the development sector, in research related work, preferably with a fieldwork component. 

3) Candidates with prior research experience in the area of labor and employment will be preferred. 

4) Candidates should be proficient in written and spoken Hindi or English.

As per the academic qualification and work experience, in line with organisation policy, tentatively between Rs 29,000-32,000.

Senior Associate position at Haqdarshak

About the Organization

Haqdarshak is a social enterprise working to make welfare schemes more accessible to citizens by creating a multi-state, multi-lingual, mobile technology platform that helps citizens discover, apply for, and benefit from, government and private schemes that they qualify for. They can use the platform through a local trained facilitator, the ‘Haqdarshak’, or themselves, on payment of a small service fee, which makes it financially sustainable. The promoters have immense experience in entrepreneurship and grassroots work in this area.

Position : Senior Research / Research Associate.

Selected candidates shall be placed as per degree of relevant work experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

The selected candidate shall be responsible for conducting research on various welfare programs and policies implemented by government and private organizations at all levels. The focus of the research is to understand a scheme from beneficiary perspective and collect information that is critical for him/her to apply for a scheme.

1. Research on welfare programs implemented by Government and Private Institutions for the benefit of the individuals / community and organizations.

2. Prepare easily comprehensible and informative write-ups for all schemes/programme. The Haqdarshak will access this information in communities through a mobile platform to inform citizens about their rights. The research will include online research and interactions with implementing officers in government/private institutions.

3. Support operations team in conducting training of Haqdarshak and resolving on ground queries for schemes/services.

4. Create new channels to popularize and create awareness amongst citizens about various welfare schemes on the portal.

5. Conduct field visits to take citizen feedback and suggestions.

6. Coordinate and work with closely with the product team for digitizing the scheme information along with various documents required.

7. Prepare questionnaire based on scheme eligibility and complete rules engine mapping for same.

8. Routinely update the research with inputs from the operations team and/or any changes if announced by government.

9. Be informed about all important current/upcoming government and private initiatives related to this field.

Qualifications and Skills

1. Minimum graduate (in any discipline)

2. Desired work experience of 1-5years (preferably in related field). The position will vary depending on degree of relevant work experience as mentioned above.

3. Must be well versed with English and local language (read and write) of the State that the candidate is placed at. For eg.) Tamil would be a Must for location in Tamil Nadu.

4. Self- interested and motivated to study about public policies and a research bent of mind. Prior experience is a plus.

5. Determined and motivated to reach targets and meet tight deadlines.

6. Willingness to travel as per requirement including travel to low income communities for close interaction.
