Job Description
The Centre for Equity Studies (CES) is looking for a Research Associate with experience and competency in conducting fieldwork. The researcher is primarily being hired to work on a project on Day Labor Markets (Labour Addas/ Labour Chowks) in urban areas; a key site will be Delhi/NCR. The work will entail using qualitative research methodologies to unpack the space of the labour market and develop a nuanced understanding of the relationships at play.
Apart from being a primary researcher on the Labour Adda Study, the candidate will be be expected to provide research support to the Sankaran Research team at CES around themes such as land, labour and employment, rural and urban poverty, rights of marginalised groups such as SC/ST communities, delivery of and access to basic entitlements. The study of these themes is located within discourses of development, studied critically through a lens of exclusion.
The research team is small in size and therefore researchers are also expected to take up coordination roles. In addition to research, as a full time employee, the hired individual will have to take on other responsibilities that are not purely research based.
Responsibilities
1)The primary responsibility of the candidate will be to conduct primary and secondary research on Day Labor Markets also known as Labor Addas/ Nakas/ Chowks. This will include research methodologies such as observational research, conducting in depth interviews and focus group discussions.
2)The research assistant will also be expected to provide editing and research support to the team, or support in organising events, as allotted by the programme manager from time to time.
3)The candidate might also serve as the point of contact between CES and one funder and will be responsible for the compilation of quarterly progress reports.
a)The candidate might oversee financial reporting for the assigned funder.
b)As and when required, the candidate might also draft proposals to apply for funding for the India Exclusion Report.
4) Other responsibilities:
- a) Conceptualizing and executing short-term desk and field based studies from time to time to supplement the other on-going research projects at CES.
Requirements
1) Candidate should have a Master’s degree in Labor studies, Development Studies, Economics, public policy social anthropology, sociology or any related social science discipline.
2) Candidates should have between 1 – 3 years professional experience in the development sector, in research related work, preferably with a fieldwork component.
3) Candidates with prior research experience in the area of labor and employment will be preferred.
4) Candidates should be proficient in written and spoken Hindi or English.
Remuneration
As per the academic qualification and work experience, in line with organisation policy, tentatively between Rs 29,000-32,000.
