The Wire is looking for reporting fellows based in Uttar Pradesh (east and west), Mizoram, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh to write deep-dive stories on sanitation workers for #Grit.
#Grit is an initiative of The Wire dedicated to the coverage of manual scavenging and sanitation and their linkages with caste, gender, policy and apathy.
The story, which can be in English, Hindi or Urdu, must be on the broad theme of the problems and challenges sanitation workers in the state face and their possible solutions. The focus could be on living and working conditions, government schemes and their impact, issues around identity and stigma, etc.
Each fellow will receive Rs 20,000 (inclusive of any travel or other expenses) for their written story, photographs and any accompanying video. The story will be published in The Wire.
To apply, please send a detailed pitch of the story you plan to cover and how you will report it, your CV and links to at least three previously published articles (on a related topic or otherwise, preferably reported from the region you wish to cover in the story) to jahnavi@thewire.in with the subject line ‘#Grit fellowship: [state name]’ by October 28. Reporters who have previously covered social issues will be preferred.
The stories must be submitted by November 20.
