We are thankless to our politicians in India!

Economics in action

A former colleague of mine is a politician and a minister. The income and wealth of him and other ministers were published in newspapers a few days ago. I felt very sad by seeing these figures. His monthly income is less than one-fourth of that of a senior government official, and he has a wealth which is equal to his salary of 3-4 months. As a person known to me, I am concerned about his welfare after the tenure. He may be able to survive with the pension that is given to former legislators (and probably with the support of his children).

His may be a special case since he has shifted from an academic position to full-time politics. Ideally we want such people to enter politics, and that may add value to the decision-making in governments. However, the kind of compensation that politicians get may not encourage many academics…
