Our work
Tata Trusts is one of India’s oldest and largest philanthropic institutions working strengthening different areas of social development like education, health and livelihoods. You will be a member of the Parag team in the Education portfolio of the Trusts. Parag is a thematic initiative to promote reading for pleasure amongst children through book development, libraries, library educators and technology ( role will be in the use of technology to promote reading through a digital library that we have built named Kitablet. It hosts 200+ handpicked books in English and Hindi from 12 select Indian publishers including Amar Chitra Katha, Tulika, Eklavya, Pratham Books and Duckbill. With books spanning fiction/non-fiction and multiple genres, Kitablet offers children from classes 1-8 a personalized reading experience. It works on a host of devices (laptops/tablets) and operating systems (windows/android/iOS). More can be read here:
Your role
You will be working to make Kitablet succeed in its 3rd year of existence. In the 1st year (June 2016-Mar 2017), the team built the product thus creating a working prototype from an idea. In the 2nd year (Apr 2017-Mar 2018), the team tested the product with about 16 schools and 5000 children spanning both private schools and NGO/govt. run schools. In the 3rd year (Apr 2018-Mar 2019), the team has focused its efforts to working with JawaharNavodaya schools in South of India. The hope is to work with about 40 schools and 10,000 children of classes 6-8. The objective is to promote the habit of reading for pleasure through a structured reading program using the eLibrary as the primary resource.
Key result areas/Job description
1. Conducting orientations and trainings for librarians, school leadership, computer teachers and language teachers for the program.
2. Conceptualizing and executing activities to encourage the use of the digital library and promote the culture of reading in the schools.
3. Supporting and monitoring the implementation of the digital library in the schools.
4. Visiting schools to understand and strengthen the implementation of the program.
5. Developing content for the program like meaningful exercises for the books, training material and ideas of engagement around the books.
6. Reviewing the usage of the books and identifying new books to be added to the digital library.
7. Capturing best practices and challenges in the program and in the field through detailed reports, blog posts and case studies.
8. Contributing to the larger program of Parag which strengthens libraries, builds capacities of librarians and illustrators, acknowledges good work in children’s literature through awards, and supports development of new books.
9. Being interested to learn about the larger work of the Trusts in Education which includes various technology initiatives, regional work to improve quality of education and teacher education.
10. Any other work assigned.
