About Vidya Bhawan: Vidya Bhawan was established in the conviction that quality education, for young and old, is important for responsible citizenship and leadership that values social justice. Beginning with the founding of a school in 1931, VB today consists of three schools, two teacher education colleges, an Education Resource Centre, a Polytechnic, a Rural Institute offering graduate and post-graduate courses, a Krishi Vigyan Kendra for farmer outreach and innovation in agriculture, and a Prakriti Sadhna Kendra for ecological preservation and study.
In 2014, VBS partnered with CPR, a premier public policy think tank based in Delhi, to explore the reasons for poor sanitation and develop policy options and strategies to support and inform Udaipur’s local government in formulating and implementing programmes for urban sanitation. This was part of a larger CPR project (“Scaling City Institutions for India (SCI-FI) Sanitation”) with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In that context, CPR had conducted action-research projects in two selected case study areas: Balasore in Odisha and Udaipur in Rajasthan. In the second phase of the project (SCI-FI 2), CPR plans to expand the capacity of institutions in Rajasthan to independently develop a strong body of knowledge around the topic of urban sanitation. The VBS-CPR collaboration is based on VBS’s strong knowledge of the Udaipur region, prior successful partnership and institutional commitment to accelerate evidence-based policies for improved sanitation.
