Projects overview:

Springs (Dhara or Jhora) are the lifeline of mountains. Approximately, 10 lakh people live in the Himalayan region of West Bengal and majority of the people depend on these mountain springs for their survival. Over time, it has been observed that these are drying up. This has created a severe threat to the entire ecosystem of the mountains. To combat the situation Government of West Bengal (GoWB) has taken up “JHARNA DHARA”(Springshed management) programme under MGNREGA. The organization is working in four Himalayan Districts (Darjeeling, Kalimpong, part of Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar) in collaboration with the State MGNREGA Cell and Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) under this programme.

When dealing with the springs is about impacting the ground water, PRASARI tied up with the Government of West Bengal (GoWB) under a programme called “USHAR-MUKTI”- (Watershed Management) to deal with the surface water adopting watershed management concepts. The purpose is to engage with the Birbhum District’s NREGA team (till that at the cutting edge) to facilitate NREGA planning and investments in the watersheds, across a large area of over 60000 hectares.

Depending on the problem and opportunities of the areas, PRASARI pitch in with a set of solutions with a field based teams of Professionals. The key focus always remains livelihoods and Integrated Natural Resource Management (INRM). Partnering with the PRI and Govt. line Departments, indeed is the main constituent.
