and environmental issues and promoting good governance processes including transparency, accountability and participatory decision-making.

Position 1 :  Senior Researcher – Environment & Climate Change

Project description
We aim to undertake exploratory research on three related aspects with the aim to fill a
gap in knowledge and its practical applications by communities. First, we will apply the
water-energy-land nexus approach to thermal power plants. The nexus approach can
guide decision-making about resource use and development, to minimise externalities
and ensure true sustainability, and help climate change mitigation measures. Second,
we will examine thermal power plant clusters to analyse cumulative impacts to develop
conceptual and practical frameworks to understand and gather evidence of impacts that
communities in the immediate vicinity of the thermal power plants can make use of to
ascertain and quantify their impacts on water, air, health, livelihoods and land. Third,
we will undertake an exercise to map and explain the sources of finance of energy in
India. This could provide insights into macro-financing opportunities for energy
investment, as well as inform communities’ advocacy for clean energy and safer
environments.

Responsibilities
Senior Researcher – Environment and Climate Change is a key position for creating
knowledge on the institutional and legislative frameworks, methodologies and practices
that can be used by practitioners and communities. This person will be responsible for
three reports: water-energy-land nexus, cumulative impact assessment methodology,
and energy finance.

The Researcher will be responsible for the following:
● Lead field work, research and documentation
● Write and contribute to research papers and reports
● Present research at national and international conferences
● Organise regular discussions, workshops and trainings
● Build and mentor a team of researchers
● Foster collaborations with local civil society organisations, academics, activists
and public departments and agencies
● Contribute to achieving project goals and managing partnerships with the city
government, civil society organisations and project partners
● Support the Director – Government Outreach and Advisory in achieving
organisational and team goals

Education
Candidates should possess an advanced university degree in an area related to the
management of natural resources (forestry, environment, geography, ecology, etc.), the
management of development programs, or other related fields. They should have
demonstrable experience in monitoring and evaluating development or investment
projects in the natural resources and energy sector.

Work Experience
Candidate should have at least five (5) years of relevant work experience, with experience in reputed think tank, non-government organisation or international
organisations in a senior position. They should be able to demonstrate specific
experience in conducting studies on environment, climate change, large infrastructure
projects, and impact assessments.

Languages
For the position, fluency in oral and written English is mandatory. Additionally,
knowledge of Tamil is desirable.

The position is based in Chennai with travel for conducting workshops and meetings.

Position 2 :  Senior Researcher – Urban Governance

Project description
The objective of the Urban Governance work area aims to promote socially and
environmentally sustainable urban development. We constantly research pervasive urban challenges, document innovations to governance, and generate knowledge that can potentially improve the institutional structure for the delivery of municipal infrastructure and services. We engage with a wide range of actors at the national, state, city and neighbourhood levels, and blend research with practice, working with academics, practitioners and policymakers to address complex and interconnected urban challenges. We work with local government and agencies to improve public infrastructure and services by strengthening their capacities to plan and maintain critical municipal infrastructure. We also engage with activists, academics, and civil society organisations on questions of urban governance and to advocate for policies that can improve municipal infrastructure and make planning pro poor.

Responsibilities
Senior Researcher – Urban Governance is a key position for developing our work on issues of urban governance with a particular focus on improving the capacities of local
governments, activists and civil society organisations to plan and advocate for pro poor
provision of public services. The Senior Researcher will lead the action and research on a
wide range of urban planning and development issues, such as land use, planning processes, water, sanitation, slums and informal settlements, waste, mobility, and placemaking.

The Researcher will be responsible for the following:
● Lead research and documentation on challenges and innovations in urban governance
with practical implications for local governments and civil society organisations
● Write and prepare research papers and reports
● Extend research support for representations to the High Court, Supreme Court, and
state and city governments
● Present research at national and international conferences
● Organise regular discussions, workshops and trainings
● Build and mentor a team of researchers
● Foster collaborations with local civil society organisations, academics, activists and
public departments and agencies
● Contribute to achieving project goals and managing partnerships with the city
government, civil society organisations and project partners
● Support the Director – Government Outreach and Advisory in achieving
organisational and team goals

experience, with experience of urban development work in or with the public sector,
non-governmental sector or international organisations. They should be able to demonstrate specific experience in conducting studies on urban water management and leading projects on sanitation infrastructure in developing countries.

Languages
For the position, fluency in oral and written English is mandatory. Additionally, knowledge of Tamil is desirable.

Position 3 :  Senior Researcher – Consumer Protection

Project description
Consumer Protection has been a key focus of CAG since its inception. We work to improve awareness of consumers on a wide range of issues, including e-commerce, electricity, real estate and telecommunications. We undertake research and advocacy activities to improve sustainable consumption and production policies and behaviours. The Consumer Helpdesk provides counselling and mediation services for consumers on these issues. We also provide training and capacity building, information dissemination and communications to achieve these objectives.

Responsibilities
Researcher – Consumer Protection is a key position in this thematic area. The role will
include creating knowledge, disseminating information through multiple media, liaising with consumer groups and government departments.

The Researcher will be responsible for the following:
● Undertake research on consumer issues, including on real estate, telecommunications,
banking and finance, etc
● Impart knowledge to consumers and communities through training and capacity
building programmes
● Create and disseminate knowledge pieces, such as reports and blogs
● Support the Director – Consumer Advisory and Outreach in achieving organisational
and team goals

Competencies
Professionalism : Knowledge and understanding of relevant concepts, approaches and public discourse

Work Experience
Candidates should have at least three (3) year of relevant work experience, with experience of working with partner CSOs in or with the public sector, non-governmental sector or international organisations.

Languages
For the position, fluency in oral and written English and Tamil is mandatory.

Location
The position is based in Chennai with travel for conducting workshops and meetings.
