The Australasian Association for the History, Philosophy and Social Studies of Science (AAHPSSS) will hold its biennial conference at the University of Wollongong between Wednesday 22 November 2017 and Saturday 25 November 2017.
AAHPSSS welcomes paper, panel and workshop proposals which are broadly consistent with the following themes:
- history of early modern science
- history of biology, physics, chemistry, geology & medicine
- history & sociology of technology
- environmental history & sociology
- sociology & anthropology of science & medicine
- philosophy of biology, physics & psychology
- science & technology policy & regulation
- indigenous knowledge systems
- science communication
The Association is also open to considering other themes, depending on relevant levels of interest, and welcome the participation of historians, philosophers, sociologists, geographers, anthropologists, STS and any other disciplines interested in the broader social and political implications of STEM-related research and practices.
Block booked and discounted accommodation will be available at the University of Wollongong Campus and in the nearby City of Wollongong. Various shuttle bus services are available from North Wollongong Railway Station and other parts of Wollongong to the UoW campus.
We also strongly encourage the participation of undergraduate and postgraduate students, for whom we will create some student-specific sessions. Students receive a discount on membership and conference registration. Some limited funds are available to subsidise travel for interstate graduates who are presenting at the conference. We also hope to use the conference as an opportunity to create a research and support network for HPS and STS students.
Currently, our plan is to hold a postgraduate workshop on the Wednesday afternoon, followed by conference registration in the early evening, and the Dyason Lecture that night. We intend to run two to four parallel paper/panel sessions on Thursday and Friday, with workshops held on the Saturday.
Closing date for paper, panel and workshop proposals is 30 August 2017. [Please note the deadline has been extended]
